Last week, I got the really great news that NIGHTMARE ACADEMY was selected by the New York Public Library for inclusion in their "Books for the Teen Age -- 2008" list. My friend, Melissa Marr, had her terrific book WICKED LOVELY included as well, so it was exciting to finally share a list with her. :)
A few nice reviews/write-ups from the UK have come to my attention, so I thought I'd include links to them here if you're at all interested:
You can check out this nice little review at the FINANCIAL TIMES.
Here's a write-up from the TELEGRAPH. They don't spend a whole lot of time talking about it, but I was pretty thrilled just to be included with Neil Gaiman and Eoin Colfer's new books.
Finally, there's a great review over at GATEWAY MONTHLY. You have to scroll down a bit to see it.
I also got a request for an interview from CITV (a very prominent website in the UK), which was a lot of fun to do. I'll let you know when that gets posted.
And that's it, I guess, for now. We're off to the beach this afternoon -- ahhhh, Southern California. :) But I plan to earn the sun and surf by working on Book 3 this morning.
Speaking of which, I've had the most miserable time sleeping lately. I dream about Book 3 all night and usually wake up around 4 in the morning thinking about it, unable to get back to bed. Most mornings, I just give up, go to the computer and start writing.
Bad for me, good for the book, I suppose. Do any of you have this problem? For me it comes and goes but it seems particularly intense lately.
Anyway, take care...

Yay for UK reviews!!
I tend to write a lot in one creative burst and then do a couple of weeks of tweaking and revising before the next burst, and when I'm in the zone I get insomnia, yes.
Hope the insomnia subsides, though. I share that sometimes. I'll often wake up in the middle of the night, thinking, thinking, thinking, and then go back to sleep and *wish* I'd just gotten up and written. :P
Have fun at the beach! I'm so looking forward to Conestoga!
Take care.
I thought the insomnia thing was just a normal reaction to plots forming . . . I get serious insomnia when the words work, except that mine hits the right after I crawl in bed & I start to drift. Then I admit defeat & go to the desk. . . and am way too tired in the morning.
BTW, what's your release schedule for the US? Are you Fall 08 for the nxt book? Is bk 1 softcover coming out simultaneously? Curious minds (ie my son) need answers :)
That has changed. They will BOTH be coming out at the beginning of September, but there won't be any paperbacks or hardcovers with dust jackets. Instead, the series is going to be paper-over-board, like LEMONY SNICKET or SPIDERWICK or DIARY OF A WIMPY KID.
I'm actually thrilled about this and advocated it from the beginning, mostly because dust jackets drive me crazy and I always take them off books before I read them. It will also make the books cheaper, which is nice. It was always my opinion that kids would prefer to have a nice, hardcover book without having to deal with a jacket and the folks at Harper now seem to agree (for reasons that have to do with the desires of the chains, as well as other things).
So... incredibly long answer to your simple question -- both books publish on Sept. 3 (in the US at least -- I'm not sure about the UK yet). They also have a new cover design and subtitles, which I'll be posting when I get the okay. If you're interested, e-mail me and I'll send them to you privately.
Take care...
