Book 3 of Nightmare Academy is done...

jacket, pub photo, final Jacket
Well, at least done enough to send to the publishers. Earlier today, I e-mailed it off to Barbara Lalicki, my editor at Harper US, and she's going to send it along to Nick Lake, my editor at Harper UK.

Sending a book off always feels like the end of a process when, in fact, it's really sort of the beginning. There will be revisions and then revisions on the revisions but, for now at least, I get to breathe a little sigh of relief and relax for a couple days.

I'll tell you this much, though -- as much as I know that hard work lies ahead, it's still really nice to type the words: THE END.

Now that I've finished up this draft, I'm going to make an effort to get back to blogging a little more. There's a bunch of cool events coming up, which reminds me -- if you're in LA this weekend and planning on going to the LA Times Festival of Books at UCLA, I'll be signing NIGHTMARE ACADEMY on Saturday at 12:30 at the Book Soup Booth, which is located between Royce Hall and Powell Library.

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to see a few of you there. :)

Take care...

Congratulations, man. It IS a great feeling, isn't it?

Hope to see you (even in passing) Saturday. Also, there's an LA YA get-together at the Luxe Hotel on Sunset that evening. You should come over!

Hey, man! We should try to hook up at BEA if possible. Also, that LA YA get-together sounds really cool. I even investigated booking a room at the hotel for the night, but it looks like they're sold out. I'll contact you later and get more info on what your plans are.

Consider it a plan! We might also meet up with Blake, the events director from Storyopolis who did my art show. If you don't know him, you should!

That's so cool to finally be able to drop it in the mail!

I know you've probably said it before, but when is that Book 2 going to hit the shelves? I'm sure all the kids can't wait to get their hands on it. :)

Book 2 will be on shelves Sept. 3rd of this year, along with a new edition of Book 1. The series will be paper-over-board (like Lemony Snicket and Spiderwick) and will have a completely new look. As soon as I'm allowed to post the new covers, I will. I'm dying to get them out there. :)

*pats chair & holds out glass* I have refreshments here waiting.

Shall we plan to whimper together at BEA? Melissa D tells me that my signing was changed to right after the breakfast, so my schedule Saturday at this point reads, "See Dean. See Dean sign. See Dean for tea/coffee/drink?"

That sounds like a FINE schedule. :)

I'll come early and hopefully catch you at your signing. Oddly enough, I have a radio interview that morning at 8am. NA 1 publishes in Australia then and a local Australian radio station is calling me at home for a chat. I'll leave for BEA right after!

8am Friday or Saturday? Breakfast & my signing are Friday. Saturday is . . . well, recovering from the list of stuff on Friday & my "Admire Dean" schedule :)

Ah, you're signing on Friday! Okay, I'll give you a call a couple weeks before BEA and we can make some specific plans. And congrats on ENCANTO FATAL! :)

Congrats! I had fun today recommending your book to a student who's working on an MG and I told her that she MUST read your book. :)

As noted before, I'm looking forward to meeting you in Tulsa!

Looking forward to seeing you there as well! God, I hope Tulsa lives up to my expectations of it, lol. It will be so nice to go there and finally meet everyone in person...

Is book 3 the last of the series, or will there be more?

Well, the full arc of the story will take 5 books, but there's a satisfying conclusion to a big part of it at the end of the third (which I just finished). It's really going to depend on if HarperCollins wants the last couple books in the series -- they initially bought it as a trilogy.

So... I just need to see what's going to happen. I'll definitely let you know when I know. :)

Yay! Excellent! And congrats on finishing book three! How very exciting. If only I could finish my first...

Hi Rebecca. :)

I'd love to see you guys. I'm trying to figure out my schedule for BEA right now, but dinner on Friday sounds good. I'll give you a call in a bit and we can make a plan...
